Succession Planning

You can’t predict the future… but the Board has a responsibility to prepare for it.

Community Colleges have entered a period marked by significant transition in executive leadership. It is important for all governing boards to value and undertake a succession planning process to ensure the best possible future for their college.

ACCT’s Board Leadership Services (BLS) can consult with boards on preparing for a planned or unplanned transition in leadership.  Working with governing boards and college leadership, ACCT will engage in activities including:

  • Facilitated appropriate, confidential, frank, and honest discussion with leadership
  • Independent audit to assess current policies for transition and institutional preparedness for leadership transition
  • Discussions on transition options with the board that minimize risk and strengthen the college during leadership transitions
  • Development of succession or transition plans as well as possible constituency plans
  • Recommendations designed for the development of internal talent through leadership and professional development programs

Good stewards are concerned about leadership stability and ensuring the best possible future for their college. Contract the BLS Team to arrange and customize a session on succession planning and leadership transition.

ACCT commends the boards who are willing to participate in an external analysis. It is a positive process.
